Cave Hill Flagpole Dedication Service

LOUISILLE, KY (10/20/2007) On a beautiful autumn day, members and friends of the John Hunt Morgan Camp gathered in the Confederate section of historic Cave Hill cemetery for the camp’s annual memorial service. At this year’s service, the camp honored the late Louis Edward Leavell, a loyal member and benefactor of the John Hunt Morgan Camp, by dedicating the newly installed flagpole to his memory.

Lt. Commander Bill Hayes demonstrated for those who gathered the lowering and raising of the Third National Flag. With the help of Compatriot Leavell, the Morgan Camp was able to replace the dilapidated old pole with a very nice new pole that will proudly fly the colors over our fallen Confederate heroes for many years to come.

As is the custom of our camp, the new members who have joined in the last year were sworn in under the flag. With one hand on an authentic Confederate artillery sword, each new member recites the oath originally written by Major R. E. Wilson, CSA, which was adapted for the camp’s use by the late Frank G. Rankin.

Compatriots Randie Bookout, Ben Kennedy and Dalton Poythress Are Sworn In

After the swearing in ceremony, the crowd gathered in the shade to hear a very interesting and informative keynote address given by Kentucky Division Chief of Staff Basil Childress of the John C. Breckinridge Camp 100 in Lexington. You may read Compatriot Childress’ entire address, entitled “What Was the Cause of the South?” by clicking the link below:
