Confederate Ancestors of Clifford and Adam Hardin
Here are a few facts about some of my ancestors who served in harm's
way in support of the Holy Cause:
My 3rd-great-grandfather (I am still researching my entire family tree)
served for the Confederacy, and the following is some of the information
I have uncovered to date.
Pvt. Alfred Hardin, 1st Kentucky Cavalry
Private Alfred Hardin, enlisted on October 14, 1861 into Company F,
1st Kentucky Cavalry in Union, Kentucky. He was later transferred
to the 2nd KY Cav, but I have not found when, where, or with what
company yet.
Alfred's service is especially meaningful to me not only because
I am a direct descendant of him, but because he chose to fight on
the side of right, rather than to go along with many of the men from
his county, including his own father, who enlisted in the Union
army and died of typhoid fever 3 months later, when he was 57 years
old. ("They died of Southern fever and Southern steel and shot"!)
While Alfred's father's grave is marked, Alfred's currently is not.
It is suspected this was because Alfred and his brother were two
men from a county strongly sympathetic to the Union who chose to
fight for independence. I said his grave is CURRENTLY unmarked,
because this is something that will be changed this fall. There
will be a dedicational ceremony, and it will be no small occasion.
Any and all interested in attending are invited (no blue uniforms
allowed!), and more information will be posted as it becomes
available.
UPDATE: Pvt. Alfred Hardin's grave is now marked! (05/17/05)
I have no documentation of this, but I am relatively certain that
I am also distantly related to General Ben Hardin Helm, General A.P. Hill,
and to General John Hunt Morgan. This is something currently under
investigation.
I am still in the process of reseaching my family tree, and I am
looking for any and all information I can find on my ancestors who
fought for their freedom. I just started this recently, so right
now I know very little, and I have a huge appetite to learn much more.
If anyone might have any information which may be helpful including
information on the units and battles listed above, it would
be GREATLY appreciated!!
